You have clean RO water with almost nothing in it, and now you need to turn it into stable, shrimp-ready water. That is exactly what a gh kh mineral dosing chart for shrimp tank use is for, it tells you how much mineral salt to add to pure water to reach the right hardness without overshooting.

The decision comes down to four variables: your shrimp species and how sensitive they are, the size of your tank and water change volume, your current water parameters and substrate, and your budget for how often you will be mixing. If you get those right, dosing becomes routine. You can browse more background in these GH/KH Mineral + RO Water guides before you buy.

What Actually Matters

Start With Shrimp Genus, Not the Jar Label

Caridina bee shrimp, bumblebee shrimp and tiger shrimp are usually kept in soft, acidic water over active soil. For that setup you generally want a GH-only mineral that raises total hardness without significantly influencing carbonate hardness, because the soil is already handling pH buffering.

Neocaridina and many mixed community tanks do better in neutral water with some KH present to stabilize pH. For those tanks look for a GH/KH mineral that raises both values together. One example formula in this category raises total hardness and carbonate hardness at a ratio of dGH/KH: 1.0/0.5, which is designed for shrimp from habitats with pH around neutral.

If you are unsure which group you have, check your substrate first. Active soil plus a GH-only salt is a common Caridina approach, while inert sand or gravel plus a GH/KH salt is a common Neocaridina approach. For Crystal Red specifics, this KH mineral guide for Crystal Red explains why KH control matters so much.

Powder Scoops Versus Liquid Drops

Powder minerals are usually dosed by volume for a batch of water. A typical instruction you will see is one measuring spoon to 10 litres, stirred outside the aquarium until dissolved and then added to the tank. Another label phrases it as one level spoonful of approx. 2g per 10 liters of water for optimal results.

That batch style works well if you mix a bucket for weekly changes. It is less convenient if you only need to top off a small desktop tank after evaporation. Liquid minerals solve that with drop or cap dosing, with one example noting approximately 15 drops equals to 1 ml and one capful is 7 ml, which makes tiny adjustments easier to measure.

Think about your routine. If you mix larger volumes at once, powder gives you many water changes per container. If you do frequent tiny top offs or keep a single nano tank, a liquid can feel more precise and less messy, though you will go through bottles faster on larger systems.

What the Ratio and Ingredient List Tell You

A good dosing chart does more than say add one scoop. It should tell you whether KH will move, and what minerals you are adding. GH-only products state they raise total hardness without significantly influencing carbonate hardness. GH/KH products state both values and the ratio, so you know KH will rise a little with every dose.

Look also for the supporting minerals. Most shrimp salts list calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium plus trace elements for molting, color and breeding. Some also mention benefits for plant growth and the microbial regeneration of biological filter substrates, which matters in a planted shrimp tank where the filter does a lot of quiet work.

Always follow the manufacturer’s own dosing chart for your specific product, start with a smaller dose than the label suggests in a new tank, and test the water after dosing. That habit matters more than any chart, because your starting RO water, your test kit and your substrate all affect the final reading.

Container Size, Dissolving Speed and Storage

Container size tells you how long a product will last, not how strong it is. One powder notes its contents are sufficient for up to 1,000 litres of aquarium water, which helps you compare value if you do regular changes on multiple tanks. Smaller jars make sense for a first tank, larger jars make sense for a breeding rack.

Dissolving behavior matters too. Some GH/KH salts note they dissolve within a few seconds when stirred, while others note that undissolved particles can be safely added to the aquarium when mixing. Either way, mix in a separate bucket first rather than dumping dry salt directly over shrimp.

Storage is simple but easy to ignore. Mineral salts absorb moisture quickly, so close the can tightly after each use and keep the scoop dry. A clumpy jar is harder to dose accurately, and inaccurate scoops are how a stable tank starts swinging.

To see how these differences look in real products, here are a few options that show the range from GH-only powders to GH/KH powders to liquids:

Detailed Review

Brightwell Aquatics Caridina GH+ is a liquid remineralization supplement designed for aquariums using reverse osmosis, deionized or extremely soft water. It is made specifically for Caridina Bee shrimp and soft water biotope tanks that need stable minerals without KH or pH shifts.

The formula replenishes calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium in ratios that support molting, osmoregulation and plant growth. In practice, it gives hobbyists precise control over general hardness and TDS, which helps sensitive shrimp and forest stream fish thrive in water close to their native habitat.

As a liquid concentrate in a 250ml bottle, it is easy to dose for new setups, water changes and routine maintenance. Brightwell Aquatics manufactures in the USA with a research based approach to tropical water chemistry, and the compact bottle is convenient for storage.

The main limitation is that it contains no KH buffering, so tanks that need carbonate hardness require a separate KH supplement. You will also need a GH or TDS test kit to dose accurately, which adds a step for beginners.

Overall, Caridina GH+ is an excellent choice for shrimp keepers who use purified water and want clean, predictable GH control. If you keep Bee shrimp or soft water species and already monitor parameters, this is a reliable, plant safe solution worth adding to your routine.

Specifications

Brand: Brightwell Aquatics, Model Number: CGH250, Volume: 250ml liquid formula. Item Form: Liquid water conditioner for freshwater aquariums.

Target Species: Caridina shrimp, soft water fish and planted biotopes. Purpose: Remineralize RO, DI and extremely soft water to maintain GH and TDS.

Key Trait: Raises GH without changing KH or pH. Pair with a KH+ supplement if carbonate hardness is required.

Matching Gear to Your Tank

If you run a Caridina bee tank on active soil with RO water, focus on GH-only powders. Salty Shrimp Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ 110g and Salty Shrimp Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ 230G are examples developed to mineralise RO water, rainwater and fully desalinated water while raising total hardness without significantly influencing carbonate hardness. The larger size is simply the more practical pick if you mix water often, while the smaller jar suits a single tank trial.

Another option for the same soft water style is liquid. Brightwell Aquatics Caridina GH+ Shrimp Mineral is formulated to restore calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium to reverse osmosis or deionized water without altering KH or pH, and it is described for Bee shrimp and other soft water shrimp. That makes it worth a look if you prefer measuring with a cap rather than a scoop, especially for small adjustments.

If you keep Neocaridina, cherry shrimp or a neutral community tank with inert substrate, look at GH/KH blends instead. Shrimp Mineral GH/KH+ 200G and Shrimp Mineral GH/KH+ 100g are examples that raise total hardness and carbonate hardness together, with one description noting support up to 6dGH and use in neutral pH environments like RO, rain or desalinated water. Stir the dose outside the tank, test after mixing, and adjust slowly rather than chasing a number in one go. This walkthrough on remineralizing RODI water shows that bucket first routine in detail.

If you want the simplest routine for a small tank or a first colony, a liquid all rounder can help. Crystalpro Shrimp Minerals 4.2 Oz is a liquid formula described for both Caridina and Neocaridina that adds calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and more to support molting and general health. It will not replace careful testing, but the drop style dosing makes it easier to learn how little it takes to move pure water.

Common Mistakes

Dosing dry salt straight into the tank. Even fast dissolving powders should be stirred into RO water outside the aquarium first, then added slowly. Dumping powder over shrimp can create a local spike in hardness and stress freshly molted animals, so mix, test, then pour.

Not testing before and after every mix. RO units drift, test kits vary, and active soil absorbs KH over time. Always test your pure water, dose a little less than you think you need, mix well, and test again for GH and KH before the water touches livestock. Keep notes so your personal chart improves with each change.

Mixing products meant for different shrimp genera. Using a GH/KH salt in a Caridina soil tank can push KH up and fight the soil buffer, while using a GH-only salt in a Neocaridina tank can leave pH less stable than you want. Pick one system, learn its dosing chart, and do not stack powders and liquids unless you understand what each one adds. More background on source water is in the RO System + Remineralize section.

My Experience

I keep a small planted Crystal Red tank on active soil with RO water, so I chose a GH-only powder in the smaller jar size to learn on. I mix in a separate bucket at one spoon to 10 litres as a starting reference, but I actually start a touch under that in a fresh bucket, stir well, wait a few minutes and test GH and KH before adding it. That slower routine stopped the molting issues I had when I used to eyeball scoops, and the colony has been breeding steadily since.

Who Should Wait or Buy Differently

A dedicated remineralizing salt is not ideal for you if you still use tap water with unknown hardness or you have not tested GH and KH yet. In that case pause on minerals, get a liquid test kit, test your tap and tank over several days, and only then decide whether you need RO plus minerals or just a simpler water conditioner. If you already run a stable tap water Neocaridina colony with regular molts and babies, adding minerals on top can do more harm than good.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a dosing chart without overdosing?

Start with RO or distilled water, add a smaller amount than the chart suggests, stir fully outside the tank and test GH and KH. Keepers commonly report that small stepwise additions are safer than one large correction, and you can keep notes to build your own chart for your bucket size.

Do I need GH-only or GH/KH minerals?

Choose GH-only if you keep bee, bumblebee or tiger shrimp on buffering soil and want to avoid raising KH. Choose GH/KH if you keep Neocaridina or other shrimp in neutral water where a little KH helps keep pH steady.

Can I mix powder and liquid minerals together?

It is better to master one product first, since each has its own dosing reference and mineral balance. If you switch forms, start low again with the new product, test after dosing, and avoid stacking them unless you know exactly what each contributes.
