A white band across a shrimp’s back, a shrimp stuck in its old shell, or deaths right after a water change all point to the same event: a molt that went wrong. Answer four questions and we’ll rank the most likely causes and what to do about each.
Why molting fails
To grow, a shrimp splits its old shell and pulls itself out, then hardens a new one using calcium and magnesium from the water. Problems start when:
- Water changes swing parameters, triggering a premature molt before the new shell is ready.
- GH is too low (not enough minerals to harden the new shell) or too high (the old shell is hard to shed).
- Diet is unbalanced — lots of protein speeds growth and means more frequent, riskier molts.
FAQ
Can a shrimp with the white ring survive?
Rarely. Keep it undisturbed with good water quality, but focus on fixing the cause so the rest of the colony doesn’t follow.
Is it normal to find empty shells?
Yes — clear, complete shells mean successful molts. Leave them in; shrimp eat them to recycle minerals.
