This page explains how we evaluate products and how the score you see on our product cards is calculated.

The Shrimpyo Score

The Shrimpyo Score is a 0-10 score shown on product cards. It is calculated from a fixed base score plus a bonus scaled to that product’s own Amazon star rating, capped at 9.9/10. The formula is the same for every product on the site, and it is not influenced by any manufacturer, seller, or affiliate relationship. A product with no rating data will not display a score.

What We Look At

For shrimp-keeping gear specifically, we weigh factors relevant to the hobby: whether a substrate or mineral product is inert vs. buffering, whether a filter’s flow rate is appropriate for a shrimp tank (gentle intake matters for baby shrimp), and manufacturer-stated specifications like GH/KH/TDS targets where available.

Chemical Dosing Content

For GH/KH minerals and RO remineralizing products, we reference the manufacturer’s own dosing chart rather than inventing specific ppm targets. Always follow the dosing instructions printed on your specific product, since formulations vary between brands.

Limitations

We are hobbyists, not a testing lab. We do not have access to every product in this niche, and our evaluations are based on manufacturer data, verified specifications, and pricing/rating history rather than side-by-side lab testing of every SKU.
